UNC Health is monitoring CDC and FDA recommendations to pause use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine

May 5, 2021: The FDA and CDC recommended pausing use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine between April 13, 2021 and April 23, 2021 for further review. UNC is following federal guidelines to resume use. Learn more here.

UNC Health is closely monitoring the situation regarding the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. As a precaution, we will follow the FDA’s recommendation and pause vaccinations using the J&J vaccine until federal authorities are able to review data and provide further guidance.

Patients who were scheduled to receive the J&J vaccine at UNC Health vaccination clinics today will be offered one of the other vaccines where possible or rescheduled as necessary. UNC Health always makes the safety of our patients our top priority and will evaluate new data as it becomes available.

To date, there have been no adverse reactions to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at UNC Health. Additional information for patients can be found here.
