UNC Health is closely monitoring the situation regarding the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. As a precaution, we will follow the FDA’s recommendation and pause vaccinations using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until federal authorities are able to review data and provide further guidance. Patients who were scheduled to receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at UNC Health vaccination clinics today will be offered one of the other vaccines where possible or rescheduled as necessary. There are different vaccines available to prevent COVID-19. Each has been found to be safe and effective. The goal of any vaccine is to keep you from getting very sick and needing to go to the hospital or dying. All Authorized COVID-19 Vaccines

  • Safe and effective
  • Nearly 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 hospitalizations and death
  • Most common side effect is soreness at injection site

Pfizer

  • Requires 2 shots
  • Authorized for age 16 or older
  • Protects against new Britain variant of the virus and lab tests predict that it protects against new variants of the virus
  • In large clinical trial, 95% effective in preventing people becoming sick with COVID-19

Moderna

  • Requires 2 shots
  • Authorized for age 18 or older
  • Protects against new Britain variant of the virus and lab tests predict that it protects against new variants of the virus
  • In large clinical trial, 94% effective in preventing people becoming sick with COVID-19

Johnson & Johnson

  • Requires 1 shot
  • Authorized for age 18 or older
  • Protects against new Britain variant of the virus and appears to provide some protection against new variants from Brazil and South Africa.
  • In large clinical trial, 66% effective in preventing people becoming sick with COVID-19
